When I was a child I
loved cartoons, and while it wasn’t my favorite cartoon, the
Jetsons was one of my regulars. Few things intrigued me as
much as George’s self-folding flying car, although the
intelligent artificial life-form Rosie came in a close second.
It was an inspiring notion that anyone could break the grasp
of gravity and take flight.

Other things that inspired me were the stories of Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, even Leonardo da Vinci. These innovators were in a separate breed from the rest of humanity. A collective driving force that shaped the way man perceived his limitations, and catapulted us to new heights. Regardless of the obstacles, regardless of the disbelief of their peers and friends, they stayed what they perceived as their natural course, to live not just a life, but a dream and vision. What separates these men from the rest of us is an absolute belief in a vision, an idea, and an inspiration. Dr. Paul Moller is such a man.
Inspired by the hummingbird in flight, and
the treacherous terrain of his Canadian home, Dr. Moller questioned then modern
day thought, and the beliefs of aeronautical standards. Instead, dreaming of a
day when there would be a vertical takeoff and landing personal vehicle, that was
easy to own and operate, without the complexities of existing vehicles.
For you see, Dr. Moller is a pioneer, a visionary. With an eloquence that allowed him to inspire others with his dream, and create not only Moller International but this years GadgetVortex Best-of-the-Best Award Winner, the M400 Skycar.
So while I was sitting on the floor on
Saturday morning wearing superman pajamas with chocolate on my face so many
years ago, Dr. Moller had already begun his journey. A journey he expects will
end in success by 2005.
What makes this tale so inspirational to me, and I’m sure anyone who examines his tale, is that regardless of the circumstances, he’s stayed on course for over forty years to see his dream become a reality. Forty years, this is not a misprint! How many of us would actually have continued for so long, on such a lengthy path? I think you see my point.
We would also like to express our special thanks to Stacy at in Moller’s PR department for her assistance in the preparation of this article. The complete interview was a tremendous honor for us.
Our hats off to Dr. Moller. Now on to the gadget.
